Copyright and licences
Last updated 6 October 2026
Who owns what on makegeodiagrams.com, and how the figures you make here may be used. This page is part of our terms of use. Questions go to contact@makegeodiagrams.com.
In short
- The problems and solutions you send stay yours.
- We hold the copyright in the figures the site draws, and give you a licence to use each one as your plan allows: Free and Personal for personal and classroom use, Pro for any use, commercial use included.
- The website and the software behind it belong to makegeodiagrams.com.
- Mathematics belongs to no one. A theorem, a construction or the fact that three points lie on a line is free for everyone to use.
What you send
You keep every right to the problems, solutions and messages you send. You let us process them only to make and keep your figures, as the privacy policy describes. Send only text you have the right to use.
The figures you make
A figure is what the site draws for you from a problem: the drawing and every file of it — the PNG, SVG and PDF downloads, the Asymptote source, the live web page and its embed code, and the figure as the app shows it. As far as copyright protects a figure, makegeodiagrams.com holds it and licenses the figure to you on the terms of your plan. Whether or not a particular figure is protected, these terms are part of your agreement with us.
| Plan | You may use the figure for |
|---|---|
| Free | Personal and classroom use, with the makegeodiagrams.com mark kept on it. |
| Personal | Personal and classroom use. |
| Pro | Any use, commercial and publication use included, anywhere, without credit. |
| Organisation | Any use, commercial and publication use included, unless the organisation's contract says otherwise. |
Personal and classroom use
- Your own study and notes, and your own school or university work: homework, projects, a thesis.
- Teaching the students you teach yourself, at a school or in private lessons: handouts, slides, tests and a class web page.
- Posting a figure while you discuss a problem — in a forum such as Art of Problem Solving, a chat, social media, or your own blog or video — as long as you earn nothing from that post.
Commercial and publication use
- Anything that is sold: books and e-books, worksheets, apps, and courses people pay to join.
- Anything a publisher brings out, in print or online: books, journals and magazines, research articles included.
- Posts, videos and pages that earn money — from advertising, sponsorship or paid subscriptions.
- Material made for a company or another organisation, other than for your own teaching.
If you are unsure which yours is, write to us before you publish.
Which plan counts
- The plan you are on when you download or copy a figure. The permission stays with that file for good, even after the plan ends.
- Moving to Pro covers every figure in your account from that day, files you downloaded earlier included.
- A refund takes the permission back. When a payment is refunded, figures downloaded while that plan was active go back to the permission of the plan you had before it — personal and classroom use, and on Free only with the mark.
- If we close an account for breaking our terms, the permissions that came with it end. If you delete your account yourself, the permissions you already have stay.
Changing and sharing your figures
- You may change your figures — colours, labels, size, cropping — and the result keeps the same permission.
- On Free, keep the mark: do not remove, cover or crop it out. A copy of a figure without the mark — a screenshot of the app, for instance — may be used only with makegeodiagrams.com named beside it.
- No credit is needed on paid plans. A mention of makegeodiagrams.com is always welcome.
- Your figures are not ours to show. We do not publish your figures, sell them, or use them in our gallery or advertising without asking you.
- When a figure shows a problem written by someone else — a competition problem, a textbook exercise — the permission covers the figure, not the problem's text. Publishing that text is between you and its author.
The player in live web pages
A live web page or embed code contains our player, egml-live.js, which draws the figure and lets readers move its points. You may host and serve it, unchanged and with its notices, to show figures made with makegeodiagrams.com, on any website. Do not copy it into other software or change it to show figures made elsewhere.
Embed code loads the player from makegeodiagrams.com, so it works for as long as our service does. For a page that must keep working on its own, download the web page — or a small web page together with egml-live.js — and host it yourself.
What belongs to makegeodiagrams.com
The website — its text, design, logo and the name makegeodiagrams.com — and the software behind it — the solver, the drawing engine, the design editor, the live player, and the EGML language's implementation and documentation — are © 2026 makegeodiagrams.com, all rights reserved, apart from the open-source parts listed below. The figures in our gallery and on our own pages are ours too: you may link to them and share them for personal and classroom use with a link back to the page.
Problems by others
The problems in our gallery come from mathematics competitions — the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), the USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) and the Sharygin Geometry Olympiad. Each is shown with its source, for study. Their copyright belongs to the competitions' organisers.
Open-source software we use
The site is built with open-source software and fonts, each under its own licence. Those licences cover the programs and fonts themselves, not the figures they help to draw.
| Software | Used for | Licence |
|---|---|---|
| Asymptote | drawing the figures | GNU LGPL 3 |
| TeX Live, Computer Modern fonts | the letters in figures | various free licences; the fonts SIL Open Font License 1.1 |
| dvisvgm | SVG files | GNU GPL 3 |
| Ghostscript | PDF and PNG files | GNU AGPL 3 |
| NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib | solving and checking the geometry | BSD licences; Matplotlib licence |
| Flask, Werkzeug, Pillow | the web server and images | BSD licences; MIT-CMU licence |
| Routines rewritten from CPython, NumPy, FreeBSD msun and LLVM compiler-rt | the live player's arithmetic, so it computes exactly what our server does | PSF License 2; BSD 3-Clause; BSD 2-Clause; Apache 2.0 with LLVM Exceptions — notices and licences |
| KaTeX | mathematics in the chat and gallery | MIT License |
| Instrument Sans, JetBrains Mono, STIX Two | the website's type | SIL Open Font License 1.1 |
| Latin Modern Roman (a subset) | the homepage's headline | GUST Font License (LPPL 1.3c) |
The fonts embedded in a figure, as the letters of its labels, may be used wherever the figure is used.
If something here is yours
If you believe something on this site uses your work without permission, write to contact@makegeodiagrams.com with the page and the work it uses. We will look into it within a few days and remove it if it should not be there.
Changes
We may update this page. The date at the top shows the latest version. A change to this page never takes away a permission that came with a figure you already downloaded.
